Dual (2022)

A fascinating and horrifying parable, Dual is one of the best films of 2022 and one the best new streaming movies to check out this week. When a woman is diagnosed with a deadly illness, she signs up for a program that will see her cloned to spare her loved ones unnecessary pain when she’s gone. But when she suddenly finds herself cured and free of illness, only one version of her may live, and the two will have to fight to the death in a dual. So begins the woman’s training for survival.

Blood Relatives (2022)

Shudder — November 22

A 115-year-old Yiddish vampire has his afterlife rocked when he meets a girl claiming to be his daughter. The young vampire seems to be telling the truth, and now he sees a chance at having a family as he travels around America in his beat-up old muscle car.

Cyrano (2021)

Prime Video — November 23

Joe Wright adapts the classic story of Cyrano de Bergerac in this underappreciated gem from last year. Game of Thrones’ Peter Dinklage stars as the titular Cyrano, who, despite his cunning way with words, fears that his appearance makes him unlovable by the object of his affections, Roxanne. But he develops a plan to win her love anyway.

Good Night Oppy (2022)

Prime Video — November 23

Opportunity, or “Oppy,” was a rover sent to Mars for a 90-day mission. Instead, she remained operational for 15 years. This new documentary explores what Oppy was up to all the way on the red planet for all those years, as well as the unique bond she formed with her humans on Earth.

Love, Lizzo (2022)

HBO Max — November 24

Global superstar Lizzo gets candid in this new documentary from HBO Max, one of the best new streaming movies to watch this week. The intimate documentary gives viewers a peak behind the scenes and sees the award-winning musician discussing body positivity, self-love, and the importance of recognizing Black women’s achievements.

The Noel Diary (2022)

Netflix — November 24

A bestselling author returns home to settle his deceased mother’s affairs in this new Christmas story from Netflix. While going through her things, he finds an old diary. Meanwhile, he meets a young woman looking for her birth mother. Can the old diary hold the answers to their connection?

John Wick (2014)

Keanu Reeves stars in this action film that launched a killer franchise. When his puppy — a gift from his deceased wife — is killed by the son of a crime boss, retired hitman John Wick comes out of retirement looking to kill the men who hurt him. And he’ll show no mercy to anyone who stands in his way.

The Independent (2022)

Peacock — November 2

A new Peacock original movie, The Independent stars Jodie Turner-Smith, Brian Cox, Luke Kirby, Stephen Lang, Ann Dowd, and John Cena. The film follows a journalist covering a history-making election that could upset the entire two-party system when she uncovers a massive government conspiracy that could decide the election.

Causeway (2022)

Apple TV Plus — November 4

Jennifer Lawrence stars in this drama about a soldier who returns home after suffering a brain injury while serving in Afghanistan. Readjusting to her old life with her mother in New Orleans, she contemplates her future as she awaits redeployment.

My Policeman (2022)

Prime Video — November 4

This new Amazon Prime Video feature stars musician Harry Styles as a policeman in 1950s Britain who marries a schoolteacher while developing a romantic (and illegal) relationship with a man. The film follows the relationships of the three characters over decades, charting social change and the complexity of forbidden love.

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022)

The Roku Channel — November 4

Parody song icon Weird Al gets the biopic treatment in the most Weird Al way imaginable. A parody of biopics, the film offers an absurd and largely fictional retelling of the true story of the rise of Weird Al Yankovic. Raised in a house where playing the accordion was a sin, Al goes on to fame and fortune, and an influential romance with pop icon Madonna, to become the greatest musical act of all time.

Angels & Demons (2009)

Netflix — November 9

A sequel to The Da Vinci Code, also based on a novel by Dan Brown, Ron Howard’s Angels & Demons sees Tom Hanks back as Robert Langdon. In this installment, the Harvard symbologist travels to Rome to warn the Vatican when he discovers the return of the ancient brotherhood known as the Illuminati.

Falling for Christmas (2022)

Netflix — November 10

Lindsay Lohan and Chord Overstreet star in this new Netflix original that sounds like a holiday riff on Overboard. When a spoiled, entitled heiress suffers amnesia after a skiing accident, she takes refuge in the home of a kind cabin owner and his daughter. Will she learn the true spirit of Christmas with some distance from her old life?

Green Room (2015)

Plex — November 12

A punk band is stuck in a nightmarish scenario when they witness violence at one of their shows. They have to act quickly to protect themselves when a group of white supremacists then targets them with the intention of destroying all evidence of the event, leaving no witnesses.

Slash/Back (2022)

Shudder — November 13

Already being compared to sleeper hit Attack the Block, Nyla Innuksuk’s Slash/Back is one of the most exciting new streaming movies to check out this weekend. When an alien object lands near the Arctic Circle, a group of Inuit girls are the world’s first line of defense against invasion. Using only traditional hunting and fishing tools, they’ll have to outsmart the invading forces to protect their home and loved ones.

Fruitvale Station (2013)

Tubi — November 15

Black Panther and Creed director Ryan Coogler’s first feature stars Michael B. Jordan as a young Black man working hard to stay out of trouble and provide for his family. Eventually, he gets swept up in a police altercation that ends in tragedy. Fruitvale Station charts the last day of his life leading up to the fateful event.

Smile (2022)

Paramount Plus — November 15

Following the disturbing suiced of one of her patients, a therapist starts realizing she may be witnessing supernatural forces that threaten her and the people she loves. This horror film was a huge hit in theaters this year and got major buzz following a creepy viral advertising campaign, and it’s streaming on Paramount Plus.

The Wonder (2022)

Netflix — November 16

Florence Pugh stars in this stirring new period drama from Netflix, one of the best new streaming movies of the week. In the Irish Midlands in 1862, an English nurse travels to a small village to observe an eleven-year-old girl who has completely stopped eating without visible negative effects. The mystery of the girl’s ailment stumps everyone and attracts pilgrims who want to witness the girl who won’t eat.

Disenchanted (2022)

Disney Plus — November 18

The sequel to Enchanted, dropping on Disney Plus 15 years after the original film, sees Giselle, Robert, and Morgan relocating to a new community. But the move knocks the real world and Andalasia off-balance. Disenchanted stars Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, Maya Rudolph, Idina Menzel, and James Marsden.

First Reformed (2017)

Plex — November 18

When he has a troubling encounter with an unstable environmental activist and his pregnant wife, a small-town pastor in upstate New York has his quiet life of piety and order completely shaken. From Raging Bull and Taxi Driver writer Paul Schrader comes one of the best new streaming movies this week, starring Ethan Hawke.

The People We Hate at the Wedding (2022)

Prime Video — November 18

This new Amazon comedy follows two bickering siblings who travel, with their mother, to their estranged half-sister’s wedding in the English countryside. Predictably, things do not go smoothly. The film is directed by Claire Scanlon and stars Allison Janney, Ben Platt, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, and Kristen Bell.

Spirited (2022)

Apple TV Plus — November 18

You can revisit Charles Dickens’s Victorian Christmas classic A Christmas Carol with this new (rather loose) adaptation on Apple TV Plus. Set in the present day and starring Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell, this new take is a musical following a misanthrope visited by ghosts who take him on a magical, redemptive journey. If you want a more classical interpretation, there will also be Netflix’s animated Scrooge: A Christmas Carol in December.
